Blog Tour Review: The Hunted, by Kristy Berridge

Elena Manory is by no means an ordinary teenage girl. Being born with the ability to heal herself from any injury, and with the knowledge that on her eighteenth birthday she will become a Vampire, Elena is aware that she is more than a little different from other girls her age.

It isn’t until she meets William Granville, an alluring and impossibly handsome vampire, that she begins to question her destiny and what secrets the Institute of Magical Intervention and her adopted family have withheld—secrets that could change the fates of not only her own life, but of the lives of all the immortals.

As events spiral out of control, William may be the only person Elena can place her trust in. He, and Elena’s magical family, must fight to save her, joining forces to defeat a common, deadly foe. For William, it is his chance to save the girl that he has searched eternity to find.
If you know me, you know I love paranormal to an almost unnatural degree. If you've followed my blog for a while, you know that my favorite of the paranormals and supernaturals is, of course, vampires. I've strayed away quite a few times, but I had a gem of a book to bring me back to my favorite topic and I think I am sort of stuck on them again - thanks to Kristy Berridge's The Hunted.

I'll start with what I didn't like about this book because I fear that, once I start talking about what I did like, I'll gush so much that I'll forget about the not-so-good things and this may seem like a one-sided review. I don't want that, so I'm preventing it. The main issue that I had with this book was that the really great stuff didn't start until about 1/3 in this book. This was probably more impatience on my part as within the first 1/3, there was some teenage rebellion and typical teenage things. Was it completely horrible and hard to get through? Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, I think that to fully appreciate our main girl (Elena), you NEED this part of the story just as much as the other 2/3 of the story. It just lacked a little less action than the rest, but rest assured there was definitely still action there - and it doesn't disappoint.

Alright, so that's pretty much all I could find that was a little under expectations for me. It's hardly anything that's going to mar the story for anyone, but I thought I would warn for those that want the full-blown story for the very beginning.

Aside from that, the book went above and beyond anything that I expected. The characters, especially Elena and William, were exceptional and there was never a moment where my interest in them waned. I am not ashamed to say that I absolutely fell in love with Elena. She's the epitome of everything that I love in a lead - she's witty, smart, independent and learns as she goes. She's a fighter and most definitely NOT one of these heroines (I use this term loosely) that is talked up, yet turns into a helpless damsel at the first sign of danger. The way this girl matures throughout the story is nothing short of staggering.

If you think just because I say that this is a vampire book that you're going to get typical storybook vampires... well, you'll be pleasantly surprised that this is not the case at all. Yes, they share certain traits with traditional vampires, but Berridge definitely has her own spin on vampire mythology that will blow you away.

There's so much to this book that I don't want to ruin anyone's reading experience by telling too much. I will say that there's pretty much something for everyone. If you like romance, there's some romance. If you like some graphic violence? There's a bit of that. Suspense? Oh yeah, there's that too. Like to see other supernatural creatures in your vampire books? Never fear, The Hunted even has that!

Seeing as how this is the first book in a five-book series, I am literally squirming in my seat to see what happens next. After reading The Hunted for myself, I am pretty sure I can safely say that all Paranormal lovers will enjoy this story. I am most definitely a fan.

I'm extremely excited to be part of the blog tour for the release of The Galahad Legacy, the sixth and final installment in Dom Testa's Galahad series. My stop is #25 on the tour. If you've missed any other stops or would like to catch up, click here.

As an added bonus, be sure to check out the bottom of this post for the chance to win all SIX books in the Galahad series - brought to you by Tor.

Excerpt:
“Did you feel any kind of presence in the darkness?” Lita said. Triana noticed that both Lita and Bon seemed to lean forward with this question.

“No, almost the exact opposite. It felt like I was leaving behind all conscious thought, and plunging into a vacuum of total nothingness. It was terrifying. But the moment I crossed that barrier, the very moment I saw the last image of the stars in my peripheral vision and was about to be swallowed by the blackness, it was as if everything turned inside out. Where it should have been an infinite darkness, suddenly there was an explosion of light.”

“Colors?” Gap asked. “Like a kaleidoscope?”

Please visit Bookworm Lisa for the next excerpt from the second chapter of The Galahad Legacy.

Blog Tour Review: Fractured Light, by Rachel McClellan

Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. But she never felt ready to face them---until now. Defying the Auran Council and everything she's been taught, Llona must learn to use her power over light as a weapon if she wants to survive.

For this review, I thought I would switch things up and start with the bad so I can end with the good. The bad: this story works with some cliches that we've seen from several stories in the past like the fact that the main character has a power but spends most of her time trying to hide it. Then of course, there's the boy who falls in love with the girl that's seemingly perfect for the girl.. yet they cannot be together for one reason or another. Really, that's about it for the bad though... and, to be honest, those things aren't such bad things. Especially since McClellan did such an amazing job putting her own spin on these things.

Aside from this, the story was amazing. I started reading it late one afternoon with the intention of only reading the hour before it was time to go to bed. Instead, I stayed up an extra two hours past my bedtime to finish the book because I could not make myself stop reading it. Nothing worked, of course... I was hooked from the very beginning.

If there was one particular reason I had to give someone to read this book, I would not hesitate in saying Llona herself. Here is a character who, in the true sense of the world, is a real heroine. She's not without her faults, but her strengths far exceed any of those. She's brave, strong and doesn't give up. If there's something she doesn't excel at, she works and works on it until she gets it. And she's a fighter. I'm not just talking about she starts out strong but turns all D-i-D (damsel-in-distress) once a boy enters the picture. She fights beginning, middle and end, even with a hunky Guardian in the picture.

And yes, there's the swoon-worthy male lead who is indeed everything a girl wants in a guy and then some. Unfortunately, there are things keeping the two apart. However, it does lead to some very crazy tension in the book that I definitely thought added another layer to the story.

You can't have a good story without a "bad guy," and Fractured Light definitely included one. I have to admit, I thought I knew but ended up second-guessing myself throughout the entire story. I changed my mind entirely too many times, but it led up to a surprise at the end - which is a nice change from knowing from the very beginning who the obvious villain is.

Fractured Light is definitely a story that keeps you turning pages until the very end. There was some events that unfolded at the very end that makes me probably a little too anxious for the next book, which I look forward to reading as soon as it comes out. If you like paranormal books with some great characters and a nice new mythology spun in, I definitely recommend you pick this one up.

Easy, right?

Now, a little information on the books!

Casey Donovan has issues: hair, height and uncontrollable trips to the 19th century! And now this --she’s accidentally taken Nate Mackenzie, the cutest boy in the school, back in time. Awkward.

Protocol pressures her to tell their 1860 hosts that he is her brother and when Casey finds she has a handsome, wealthy (and unwanted) suitor, something changes in Nate. Are those romantic sparks or is it just “brotherly” protectiveness?

When they return to the present, things go back to the way they were before: Casey parked on the bottom of the rung of the social ladder and Nate perched high on the very the top. Except this time her heart is broken. Plus, her best friend is mad, her parents are split up, and her younger brother gets escorted home by the police. The only thing that could make life worse is if, by some strange twist of fate, she took Nate back to the past again.

Which of course, she does.

The last year has been smooth sailing for Casey Donovan. She and her boyfriend Nate are doing better than ever, and things at home are good, too. Everything’s been so calm, she hasn’t even “tripped” back to the nineteenth century.

Then the unthinkable happens and she accidentally takes her rebellious brother Tim back in time. It’s 1862 with the Civil War brewing, and for Tim this spells adventure and excitement. Finding himself stuck in the past, he enlists in the Union army, but it doesn’t take long before he discovers real life war is no fun and games.

Casey and Nate race against the clock to find Tim, but the strain wears on their relationship. It doesn’t help that the intriguing new boy next door has his sights on Casey, and isn’t shy to let her know it.

Can Nate and Casey find Tim in time to save him? And is it too late to save their love?

Blog Tour Review: All's Fair In Vanities War, by Elizabeth Marx (& Giveaway!)

Salem’s always held sinister secrets. No one understands this better than a sixteen-year-old girl who dies on Halloween night and is reborn a Seer.

The Seer can’t imagine anything worse than being an invisible teenager with enormous black wings. Until she finds out she’s been sacrificed to watch over Locke’s new flame.

Locke Cavanaugh is a Druid, and part of the Order, a clandestine organization entrusted with keeping its members cloaked in the Ordinary world. Physically scarred from the accident that took his girlfriends life, Locke is searching for the OtherWorldly magic that damaged him, because only those without blemish can rule the Order. And once at the helm of the Order he has every intention of finding those responsible for her death.

On the West Coast, Keleigh Flaherty witnesses her parents’ murder by beasts that should only exist in nightmares. She is whisked off to the safety of Salem, where she learns how potent and dangerous her concealed Vate talents are. Keleigh wants to be Ordinary, but when her mother reaches out from the OtherWorld, and implores her to find a forgotten relic she’ll have to use all her ExtraOrdinary powers to locate it.

As Locke and Keleigh join forces, they unravel the Order’s involvement in the witch hysteria and murmurs of a Celtic prophecy. While Locke’s affection for Keleigh blooms, The Seer is torn between her duty to protect Keleigh, and her desire to stop Locke from making the ultimate sacrifice in order to earn Keleigh’s love . . .

But if they don’t find the witches bottle before the ShiningOnes do, someone stalking Keleigh from the shadows will take her instead and plunge all worlds into chaos.
I want to start by saying that after reading this book (which I did a while ago but had to wait for the blog tour to post my review), I knew this could be one of those books where people would either understand it and fall madly in love with it - or they'd just get confused and give up. I've seen both and can understand both sides. Fortunately for me, I fell madly in love with it.

This book is chock full of history, mythology and plot. Add to that it's written from the point of view of the Seer and not necessarily one of the main characters the book focuses on (Keleigh/Locke), you have the potential to be overwhelmed. I think I can safely say this book is not meant to be read quickly or skimmed through - it's intended for those that can sit down and fully immerse themselves in the rich details written on page upon page. If you have that sort of time, then you definitely won't regret it.

There was an amazing cast of characters starring in this book. Keleigh is the sort of girl that just tries to blend in with everyone else, when she truly stands out no matter what she does. Locke is a wild spirit that I honestly can't pin down with just a few words because he is truly everywhere with his personality and emotions. Both Keleigh and Locke's best friends are amazing supporting characters, full of charm and loyalty. Over all of the characters though, I think the Seer was the one that struck me as one of the most intriguing. Perhaps it was because the book was from her POV mostly, but her personality and wit really added another level to the story. It was strange to read the story from a secondary character's perspective, but it also added something unique to the story that I don't think would have been present had the POV from the story been from someone else. And even though the story is told from her POV, the Seer is still something of a mystery that keeps the element of intrigue that isn't necessarily quenched by the end of the story - making it impossible not to want to read more about her.

All's Fair In Vanities War has everything that I could ask for in a great read and I cannot wait to read more. If after reading my review, you're not in the least timid by this book... then I would wholly recommend checking it out.

More Blog Tours!

I have two new blog tours coming up that I will be hosting, and would love to have some of my fellow bloggers be part of the tour. To make things a little simpler, I thought I would just post the book cover, synopsis, some links and then the link to sign up for the tour. If you're interested, please feel free to sign up for either or both!

Boy watching with her best friend would be enough excitement for fifteen year old Casey Donavan. She doesn't even mind life at the bottom of the Cambridge High social ladder, if only she didn’t have this other much bigger problem. Unscheduled trips to the nineteenth century!

When Casey gets talked into going to the Fall Dance, the unthinkable happens--she accidentally takes Nate Mackenzie, the cutest boy in the school, back in time. Protocol pressures her to tell their 1860 hosts that he is her brother and when Casey finds she has a handsome, wealthy (and unwanted) suitor, something changes in Nate. Are those romantic sparks or is it just ‘brotherly’ protectiveness?

When they return to the present things go back to the way they were before: Casey at the bottom of the social totem pole and Nate practically the flag flying from the top. Except this time her heart is broken. Plus, her best friend is mad, her parents are split up, and her little brother gets escorted home by the police. The only thing that could make life worse is if, by some strange twist of fate, she took Nate back to the past again.

Which, of course, she does.

Miss World Blog Tour Guest Post

!!! Warning: This post includes some language. You've been warned. !!!

A Guest Post From Author Randi Black

In Miss World, Kim’s sexually harassed by a gross older dude at Lollapalooza ‘94. This happens during L7, of all bands. No one does anything about it. Not even security, who just stands in front of the stage with their arms across their chests. She and her imaginary friend take matters in their own hands, and Gross Guy gets his in the end.

This is taken from my own experience at Lollapalooza ’94. I was sixteen and drifting away from my only two friends in high school. They had no idea what happened to me. I resented the fact that they went to so many parties while I had a 9pm weekends-only curfew. They teased me because I couldn’t hold my liquor like they could. They knew I regularly saw older dudes behind my parents’ back. At the time, I believe they were both virgins. I once heard someone say that in a group of three girls, there’s always the nice one, the smart one, and the slutty one. I was number three.

Anyway, we got into an argument while we were waiting in line. I still don’t remember what it was all about. It was bad enough that once we got to the gates, I told them to fuck off and walked away. Something I’ve been wanting to do for months. Unfortunately, they were also my ride home, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to have fun without feeling so lonely amongst my friends.
Doing stupid yet liberating things was one of my talents. You could say I was ruled by impulse. By the act of running away. It was such a precious, fleeting thing to me.

Lollapalooza ’94 came to town during one of the hottest days of the summer. By the Green Day came on, my arms and face and scalp were already burnt. My throat ached for water while it seeped from my pores. But that didn’t matter. I was drunk on the smell of sweat and smoke and booze. Only a few people in the crowd knew me. And they probably wouldn’t be able to find me. Alone, I instantly lost ten pounds and walked taller. I told myself that if I was going meet a guy, he had to be my age and attractive. No skinny yet flabby creeps in his their twenties with way too many gray hairs. Surely I could do better than that on a day like this. It was the most self-assured I felt for months.

Until L7 came on.

They opened their set with “Deathwish,” which was fitting. The band was exactly how I imagined them to be. Beautiful and raucous. Larger than life on the tall, barricaded stage. After everything that happened to me, the desire to be up there one day was still alive. But being front and center was just as good. I danced and sang along and didn’t give a fuck.

A few songs in, I felt a presence behind me. Whoever it was made my shoulders tight. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. When I turned around, the first thing I saw was my two reflections in a pair of mirrored Oakley sunglasses. The rest of him was slightly taller than me. Long brown hair and a receding hairline. Skin tanned so deeply it looked like leather. I turned back around. Sought comfort in L7. Tried to pretend there wasn’t some creepy guy behind me, but he got hard to ignore once he started rubbing himself against me. I stopped screaming and thrashing around. When I looked down, I saw his hands slipping into the front of my tank top while he humped me from behind. Security, who was right in front of me, didn’t do anything. Everyone around me magically faced forward. Pretended this wasn’t happening during L7. They’re the ones who organized Rock For Choice and inspired many girls to start bands, but here I was, too much of a dead girl to stop someone from molesting me in public.

That was when I realized I shouldn’t have ditched my friends.

At one point, Donita Sparks looked in my direction and yelled, “Leave her alone! She just wants to rock!”

But he didn’t leave me alone. And repulsed as I was, I still hung out with him after the show. When I really think about it, the first thing that comes to mind is that I was powerless when he was sexually harassing me, and I somehow thought I could get it back by hanging out with him.

His name was Bob. He claimed to be 25 and from Fullerton, which was half an hour away. His shorts were too short and I don’t know why he even wore moccasins in a mosh pit. But he told me that I was hot and beautiful and pretty. I told him my name was Jennifer and I was 17. That I really missed my boyfriend, who was in jail for attempted murder. He had his sunglasses on the whole time. Probably knew I was bullshitting him, but wanted to fuck me, anyway.

I asked him if he was going to rape me. His answer? Yes.

Luckily we were sitting in the field and surrounded by people, so he could never do it. In the distance, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds played songs that were out of place on such a sunny day. They were the kind of dark, romantic songs you listened to with your lover. Not some gross guy named Bob.

So I told him I was into tying up men and beating them. I loved using whips and chains, but only on other people. What about a wooden paddle, Bob? Or a black leather paddle with lots of metal spikes? And yes, Bob, I would love to piss and shit all over you.

He seemed to take it all in stride. Showed me yellowing teeth every time he smiled. But then, he looked at his watch and told me he had to go find some of his friends. I remained sitting on the field after he got up and left. Watched the rest of Nick Cave’s set alone.

I didn’t see him the rest of the day. But after him, I was in no mood to meet any more guys. So I spent my time singing and moshing and crowd-surfing as best as I could. Anything to make me feel like my old self again.

I ran into my estranged friends in the parking lot later that night. They told me to get into the car. We drove back in silence. Once school started, I knew we wouldn’t be talking anymore. We wouldn’t until a decade later, when we were twenty-seven and decided to put it all behind us.
